Why You Need to Schedule an AC Tune-up

June is right around the corner and we have already had some hot days on the books. Summer is fast approaching and now is the time to get your air conditioning system tuned up. Here’s why.

Reason #1: Tune-ups improve energy efficiency.
Regular preventative maintenance on your air conditioning system means it will use energy with greater efficiency. This will save you money on your utility bill each month. Our experienced team of heating and cooling specialists will clean the coils, blades, and other internal machine components. Clean systems that can move and operate how they are intended will help generate clean and cool air with maximum efficiency.

Reason #2: Tune-ups help increase the lifespan of the unit.
A quality air conditioning system is an investment that will last you many years and if you take care of it, it can increase the lifespan even more. Just like a car needs regular oil changes and tune-ups, so does your air conditioner! Unfortunately, our service team sees many systems need expensive repairs or even see those that are completely broken down because they have neglected to take care of basic maintenance.

Reason #3: Tune-ups will help you breathe cleaner air.
Did you know that indoor air quality is oftentimes worse than outside air? The air you breathe matters and sometimes you won’t even know that you’re breathing dirt, dust, and debris that is transferred from your system into your home. A new system can greatly improve your indoor air quality and ensure that no harmful particles pollute the air that you and your family and friends breathe.

Summer heat is on its way: is your cooling system ready to do its job? When was the last time you’ve had a tune-up on your AC system? Keeping your air conditioner in tip top shape this season is key to making it through the upcoming warm months. Call us today to get an appointment scheduled or to talk to us about a full system replacement.

How to protect your heating system from ice and snow

Local weather forecasters are predicting that this February in Oregon will be cold and that we will be seeing several different storm situations that could bring ice and/or snow. We have another month or so left of winter and with snow and ice potentially on the horizon, it’s important to know how to protect your heating system from ice and snow. Here are some helpful tips.

#1: Get rid of debris.
Be sure that your outside unit is clear of debris with a two-foot clearance around the unit, including the top. Never use sharp objects to remove any ice or snow that has accumulated on or around the unit, as this could cause damage. It’s also important to remember to never put any storage on top of the unit.

#2: Prune trees.
If there are trees surrounding the outside of the unit, be sure the trees are pruned regularly so there is not a risk of weak tree limbs falling and damaging the unit. Snow and ice can build up on those limbs and cause them to crack and break, falling and causing expensive damage to the furnace or heat pump.

#3: Cover and insulate pipes.
If there are pipes or tubes that that are exposed on the unit, be sure they are covered and insulated before the freezing weather hits. Pipes are prone to bursting during freezing temperatures and it’s important that they are protected during the coldest winter days.

#4: Schedule preventative maintenance.
Staying on top of preventative maintenance for your system is key to detecting any hidden problems. During this appointment, our experienced technicians will clean or replace air filters, clean the blower motor, check for any undiagnosed issues, replace any parts, and ensure that the machine is working at peak efficiency so there are no unexpected breakdowns or surprises when you need your heating system the most.

Perhaps your system is on its way out and it isn’t reliable enough to provide constant warmth for the rest of winter and into spring. Contact us today for information on getting a new system in place. Perhaps it just needs a tune-up or repair – we can do that too! We look forward to serving you!

3 Steps to Get Your HVAC System Ready for Spring

Spring has officially arrived. Spring in the Pacific Northwest can be truly wonderful – a mix of rain, sun, blue skies, and lots of budding flowers. With the change of season, many homeowners are working around their home getting their annual “spring cleaning” done. This is the perfect time to get your HVAC system prepped for the upcoming spring and summer months, too. Here are some steps to get your HVAC system ready for spring.

Step #1: Clean around the outside unit.
Winter weather brings lots of rain, wind, and icy conditions. Over time, this can cause build up around the outside of your HVAC unit and if this isn’t cleaned up, it could cause restricted airflow. In addition, if there are pieces of dirt and debris that have built up on the actual machine itself. This could interfere with not only the flow of air but could cause damage to the inside components of the machine. This means your system will be working harder than is necessary and your utility bill will likely increase.

Step #2: Replace your old thermostat.
When was the last time you thought about your thermostat? Springtime is a great time to upgrade your thermostat to a programmable one. These kinds of thermostats allow homeowners to regulate the temperature day and night, even when they’re not at home. This translates to being more comfortable and saving money! Programmable thermostats allow you to designate your desired temperature based on your unique schedule. For example, if you’re gone all day at work, there’s no need to keep your heat on. So, program the thermostat to turn down or off when you’re away, then program it to turn back on shortly before you arrive home, so you can come home to a room that’s comfortable.  Our favorite programmable thermostat is the Côr™ by Carrier. It has been proven to save homeowners up to 20% in their utility bill year-round and can work in tandem with most HVAC system brands.

Step #3: Clean and replace air filters.
This home maintenance to-do is one that’s easy to forget about and neglect. Dirty filters translate to dirty, dusty air! No one wants to breathe dirty air, so make sure to clean them every couple of months. This will help reduce the flow of dust, mold, allergens and other germs and bacteria that cause sickness. This will also help your system work more efficiently!

Spring is a wonderful time of year and we’re happy to help you with getting your HVAC system prepared. Schedule a preventative maintenance appointment to ensure that your heating and cooling system is working well and that there are no hidden issues that could cause an unnecessary breakdown. Or, if you need help with replacing your system altogether, we can help something that will fit well with your home and your budget. Our professional HVAC technicians and sales team are ready to help, so contact us today!

My air conditioning isn’t keeping up with the heat: is there something wrong?

Summer has arrived and that means that Oregonians will be facing some warm days in the next couple of months. There’s nothing more frustrating during a hot summer to realize that the air conditioning that you’re relying on to keep you cool and comfortable isn’t able to keep up with the demand that you have to keep your house cold. So, what’s going wrong with it? There can be several reasons.

Reason #1: The outdoor unit needs to be cleaned well.
Oftentimes, outdoor HVAC units will collect debris and dirt along the surface and sometimes even inside. If this begins to build up over time, the coil will not be able to cool the refrigerant by releasing the heat.  It is important for your air conditioner to receive annual maintenance that will keep your equipment in peak working condition so you will stay comfortable in your home all year long.

Reason #2: The air filter needs replacing.
If you don’t regularly change your air filter, debris will get caught and start slowing down the airflow. This will affect how the unit cools your home and if the filter is not replaced, it could even cause damage if left unattended for months on end. We recommend that you change your filter every 1 to 2 months depending on the type of filter you have and if you run your fan continuously.

Reason #3: Your unit is the wrong size.
If you’re not staying cool, the air conditioning unit that you have may not be big enough to cool your whole house. We’re happy to come out and take a look at your system and be sure that what you have is adequate. If not, we can offer some options for a new system that will fit your budget.

Reason #4: The system is losing refrigerant.
To keep your unit working properly, you will need to have the refrigerant stay at the same level. If it’s leaking, the unit will not be able to maintain cooling efficiently. And worst of all, dropping levels of refrigerant can cause damage to the internal components, which could be very expensive to fix.

Temperatures are going to start rising fast, so now is the time to get your air conditioner looked at. Whether your home or commercial office is located in Portland, Tigard, Tualatin, Beaverton, Lake Oswego, Wilsonville, or Sherwood, our team of experienced technicians is ready to take a look at your system to see what’s going on. If it needs repair, you can count on us to fix it. If it’s a new system you need, you can count on us to install the system that fits your needs and most importantly, your budget! Call us today for a no-pressure appointment so we can help provide you with options.
