Getting the most out of your ductless heating system this winter

mrslimwallIf you’ve recently invested in a ductless heat pump, we congratulate you! This is one of the best and most advanced heating and cooling systems available today and it will provide you years of reliable service! If you haven’t yet purchased a ductless heat pump but are considering it, we’ve outlined some ways to get the most out of your system.

Tip #1: Keep close attention to the thermal envelope of your home.
What’s a thermal envelope, you ask? This is the barrier between the inside temperature of your home and the outside temperature. The thermal envelope includes factors like insulation, air sealing, and the quality of windows and doors in the home. You should be sure that you have quality insulation in the home, as well as good windows and doors that can retain heat and keep the warm air inside rather than leaking it out. If your home is good at retaining heat, then your ductless heat pump won’t need to work as hard.

Tip #2: Use back up heat if needed.
Instead of maxing out your heat pump and running it at high temperatures to cover the extreme cold outside, plan to use back up heating sources if needed. Maybe you have electric wall heaters or space heaters – use those in cases that the weather is extremely cold so it gives your heat pump a bit of a break.

Tip #3: Protect the outside unit.
We don’t live in an area that gets a lot of snow each winter, but even so, you should protect the outside unit from extreme winter weather, such as snow or ice. Be sure that the area where it is mounted is covered so the outdoor condenser/compressor doesn’t get snowed or iced in. This could cause the system to malfunction or air flow could be restricted.

Tip #4: Keep it maintained.
Your ductless heating system is a great investment and should be taken care of with regular maintenance. Filters should be cleaned monthly and replaced every other month, especially when it is being used heavily in the cold winter months.
