Reasons to Replace Your Furnace and AC Simultaneously

We have been getting a lot of calls recently from customers wondering if they should replace their furnace and air conditioner at the same time. Your heating and cooling equipment works together to form a full HVAC system. The furnace, blower, and evaporator coils are located inside the home and are connected to the ductwork. AC units will sit outside the home. Together, these systems work alongside each other to provide comfort all year long.

Replacing these together can have several advantages. Your heating and cooling system is an important investment in your home and will last for years to come. But making that decision requires some research. Here are some reasons to replace your furnace and air conditioner at the same time.

#1: The system(s) are old.
If your furnace and air conditioner are over 15 years old, it is time to consider upgrading. The older your system is, the more prone it is to expensive repairs or even a full system breakdown. These can be costly and come at unexpected times, which can cause added stress. Replacing both at the same time will help maximize your investment and provide you reliable comfort for a long time.

#2: Utility bills are rising.
Have you noticed that your energy bills are consistently going up? This could mean that your HVAC system is not functioning at its peak anymore. In fact, it could indicate that there is an internal problem. If your system is efficient, it is working harder than it has to, and that causes your utility bill to skyrocket, which is never a pleasant surprise.

While it often makes sense to replace the furnace and air conditioner at the same time, we do not usually recommend doing this if the furnace is less than 10 years old. In most instances, it makes more sense to repair the unit.

Not sure if your home needs both systems replaced? Our no-pressure team at Specialty Heating and Cooling is ready to help you make your final decision. We will provide information on what systems could work for your home and will work within your budget. And, if a full replacement is not needed quite yet, we will let you know. We will also help with any repairs that are necessary to help get things functioning in time for the warmer springtime weather. Contact us today for information!

Is Your AC Ready for Warmer Weather?

The weather is beautiful lately! Warmer weather will be here to stay, starting soon. Summer will be here before we know it and now is the time to get your air conditioning ready. Here are some reasons why you should act now to get your AC tuned up and functioning well before hot days become the norm.

#1: AC tune-ups improve your energy efficiency.
Saving money is something that many families are really focusing on right now. That means determining how you can save energy around your home. Did you know that regular maintenance on your air conditioner will reduce excess energy use? Our experienced team at Specialty Heating and Cooling will clean coils, blades, and other internal components. We will run an energy efficiency check, make sure that the filters are cleaned, and ensure that everything is operating at peak efficiency. Clean systems will move and operate as they were intended to and that means you won’t see spikes in your energy bill.

#2: AC tune-ups make your system last longer.
Nothing is built to last forever, unfortunately. However, a quality air conditioning system installed by our experienced team will last you for many years if you take care of it. Just like a car needs oil changes and regular tune-ups, so does your air conditioner! We often see systems that have not been taken care of and unfortunately, these service calls usually require expensive repairs and sometimes even full system replacements. Basic maintenance keeps your system functioning well and ultimately, will make it last longer.

#3: Tune-ups ensure that the system is working to bring in clean air.
Outdoor air quality is something we hear a lot about. But did you know that indoor air quality is often worse than the outdoors? A clean, tuned-up air conditioning system helps cool the air, but it also will help eliminate harmful particles from entering the air you breathe. Sometimes debris, dirt, dust, pollen, and other pollutants can make their way into your home via your system. A tuned-up system will greatly improve your air quality.

What to Look for When Hiring a Heating & Cooling Company

When your heating or cooling system needs a repair or replacement, there are lots of different companies to choose from. Once you start researching options, you might feel overwhelmed. Which one is the best choice.? Here’s what you should look for when hiring a heating and cooling company.

#1: Their overall experience.
As with any job, the more experience there is, the better. This is especially true when it comes to heating and cooling installations and repairs. When you’re looking for companies, look at how long they’ve been in business in the local area, and determine if they do work on commercial or just residential jobs. Ask them about their technician team and what kind of experience and training they undergo.

#2:  Their reviews.
Positive reviews speak volumes. Research online reviews for the company, looking closely at Google, Facebook, and Angie’s List. If there are negative reviews, read through them and do some comparison. Are there recurring themes? If so, this could be a red flag. Weigh the positives and negative reviews. Reviews go a long way in seeing what priorities the company has – are they in it just for the business or are they in it to really serve their customers well with quality workmanship?

#3: Their service offerings.
What kind of services does the company provide? Do they offer preventative maintenance service, as well as repairs and replacements? Having a new system installed in your home is one of the larger home investments that homeowners make, so it’s important to find a company that can handle everything in regard to your home comfort system. That way, you can call them for anything that may come up in the future.

We are proud of our experienced team of professionals at Specialty Heating & Cooling and have been in business for more than three decades. We are also 10-time award winners of the President’s Award from Carrier. Why You Should Get Your Commercial System Serviced for Spring

Spring weather has arrived, and the days are warming up! The change of weather is the perfect time to get your commercial system serviced. Here are some key reasons why your commercial system should be looked at this season.

#1: Regular preventative maintenance reduces your chances of a system breakdown.
Pacific Northwest spring days can be warm one day and cool the next. That means your system will need to be ready to handle whatever the weather throws our way. Regular system maintenance can save you the hassle of having your system break down, right when you need it most. In addition, equipment that isn’t maintained can waste energy dollars. This will add up to be an additional expense that can dip into your business profits, so stay ahead of the game and schedule your routine maintenance right away.

#2: It will help keep your employees comfortable and safe.
If your heating and cooling system is not properly maintained, there could be leaks or other electrical damage happening to the machine. This could cause an unsafe work environment for your employees and potentially your customers. If there are broken wires or other damaged parts in the system, it could be a fire hazard. Our experienced team of technicians at Specialty Heating and Cooling will look closely at the system and spot any issues before they become a safety or comfort issue.

#3: It can help keep the system working longer.
Regular preventative maintenance is kind of like getting your oil changed on your car. It helps keep it running smoothly, but it also prolongs the life of the system. In addition, it will help ensure that you are up to date on your warranties. New commercial systems can be expensive to repair or replace, so ensuring that it works as long as possible is important as a business owner or manager.

Specialty Heating & Cooling has been working with commercial customers of all kinds for over 30 years. We service and repair all brands and will leave you with a written report after every service appointment! It’s Not Too Late to Replace or Get a New Air Conditioning System!

We saw record high temperatures in July throughout the Portland Metro area this year, and August is already shaping up to be hot, with consecutive days in the 90s. Your conditioner plays a key role in keeping you comfortable this summer, but what if your air conditioner isn’t keeping up with the summer heat? There could be several reasons why this is happening, and it could mean that it’s showing signs that you need to replace your AC system.

Is your outdoor unit cleaned well?
Many times, outdoor HVAC units that collect debris or dirt over the year can get inside the system and the coil could be affected. A dirty coil means that the it won’t be able to cool the refrigerant by releasing the heat. Your air conditioner should undergo regular maintenance at least once a year to make sure that the equipment is clean on the inside and out, and to ensure that the system is working at its peak.

When was the air filter replaced or cleaned?
Filters that are not cleaned or changed regularly means that dust and debris will build up. If this happens for long, airflow will be affected, and it could also cause damage to the system if it’s left unattended. We recommend that homeowners change or clean their air filters on a regular basis to ensure that it’s clean and functioning well.

Is the system losing refrigerant?
Refrigerant will need to stay at the same level to keep your air conditioner working well. If you notice any leaking, the unit will not be able to cool your home with efficiency. In addition, if the system is low on refrigerant levels, it could cause damage to the internal components, which could mean a costly repair for you.

Temperatures are continuing to rise, so if you’re having issues with your air conditioner, it’s important to get it looked at soon. If your cooling system is more than 10 or 15 years old and it has been repaired numerous times, it may be time to consider an AC replacement. Throwing money into repairs time after time could end up being a waste of money if the system is out of date.  It’s not too late to get a new system this summer! You can count on us to install a system that fits your needs and most importantly, fits your budget! Call us today for advice on having a repair versus a replacement.

Why is my air conditioner not blowing cold air?

This week we are seeing record heat for what might seem like an unending stretch of days. With highs in the upper 90s, people are turning to their air conditioning system to provide comfort. But what if you turn on your air conditioner and it isn’t blowing cold air? Here are some of the most common reasons why your air conditioner might be doing this.

#1: Your filter is clogged.
Your air filter plays a very important role in the overall functioning of your cooling system. Not only does it filter the dirt and debris from the air to help provide you clean air to breathe, but it also affects how the system runs. Excess debris build up will impact airflow, which could cause your system to not do its job. Take out the filter every 1 to 2 months to check and make sure it is not dirty, and either replace it or clean it thoroughly. This will help prolong the life of your system too.

#2: Dirty coils.
Your evaporator coils will get dirty over time and if they are not cleaned well, it can affect the performance of your air conditioning system, making it more difficult to remove warm air from your home. If the coils are extremely dirty, more serious issues can occur like having the system completely overheat and shut off. Contact our team of experienced technicians at Specialty Heating and Cooling for a preventative maintenance appointment, where we will make sure that the evaporator coils are cleaned properly.

#3: Leaks.
Refrigerant is required for your air conditioner to do its job, but if there is a leak, then your home will stay warm and your system may not be blowing cold air. Refrigerant can be hazardous to handle, so make sure you contact our team of technicians to do the work if this is something you suspect as the problem. Another type of leak that can happen is an air duct leak. If there are leaks in your air ducts, the cool air may be escaping, instead of going into your home, where you need it most. Air duct leaks cause homeowners to lose hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars each year. We can help with that. We are proud to use Aeroseal technology for our customers that are experiencing duct leakage in their homes. Contact us today for information on how Aeroseal may be right for you.

If your air conditioner is not blowing cold air, don’t ignore it. Our team at Specialty Heating and Cooling is standing by to help get you on the path toward a cool and comfortable summertime. Contact us today for information on getting your AC repaired or replaced.

How to keep your pets cool during the summer heat

Summertime in Oregon means plenty of fun and relaxation in the sun, but for your pets, it only takes a little bit of exposure to the warmth before they feel overheated. We love our pets here at Specialty Heating and Cooling and want to remind our customers to don’t forget about keeping your pets out of the heat. Here’s how to keep your pets cool during the summer heat.

#1: Hydration is key.
Your pets can get dehydrated very quickly so it’s very important to keep cool water accessible to them all day long, especially when the temperatures really start to climb. Don’t forget about drinking plenty of water, too! Replenishing your electrolytes and the water you have lost throughout the day is very important to maintaining your overall health.

#2: Take walks early in the morning or later at night.
The pavement gets hot, hot, hot during the summer weather and that means that it can burn the pads of your dog’s paws very easily. In addition, walking in the heat will likely cause them to overheat. To avoid any issues with paw burns or overheating, change up your walking routine to go early in the morning or later in the evening. This will still allow you and your pet to get outside and enjoy the summertime and be active, but it will keep you from having to deal with a sick pet later.

#3: Be sure your AC system is tuned up and ready to handle the heat.
When was the last time your AC system was looked at from the inside out? Your cooling system plays a big role in the overall comfort for both you and your beloved pet. Scheduling a preventative maintenance appointment with our experienced team of technicians at Specialty Heating and Cooling means we will check out the inside of the system including the motor, clean your air filters, and let you know of any potential issues that we notice. Once your system is working at peak efficiency, we will be on the road and you can stay comfortable for the rest of the summer!

Not sure if your air conditioning will withstand the rest of the summer? Now is the time to fix that. Whether it’s a split ductless system, a traditional air conditioner, or a heat pump, we have a variety of cooling options that will fit your home’s unique layout and most importantly, fit your budget. SHC Cares: Our team visits the Oregon Humane Society!

This past Saturday a team of Specialty Heating & Cooling employees volunteered their time at the Oregon Humane Society through our giving back program, SHCCares.  Our time was in remembrance of Ben Snodgrass.   Ben was a long time employee of Specialty Heating & Cooling who passed away earlier this year.   He loved animals and his family had asked that his memory be carried on through supporting the Oregon Humane Society.

While at the Oregon Humane Society, the group worked on cleaning up the dog-walking paths behind the facility.   We also learned about the history of OHS & the organization’s long-term goals for expansion. We also had a tour of the facility and got information about additional volunteering that we can do as a group in the future. One of our favorite parts was meeting several dogs as they were being walked along the path.

“I have known about OHS for a long time and have adopted a dog from them in the past, but did not know about all the history and what they do as an organization beyond adoptions.  It was a great way to remember Ben in this special way.  I also enjoyed spending time with our staff outside of work, we have great people who work for us!”   – Owner, Sarah Streeter

“I had a great day of giving my time to an organization that I love.  All of my life, my pets have been adopted from shelters.  I enjoyed spending time with my co-workers outside of office hours working on a project to service our community.  A part of our time at OHS was spent on a tour of their facilities learning about their various programs that they offer to our community.  I am very much looking forward to contributing on future projects.”  – Tanya S.

“I would like to thank Specialty Heating and Cooling and the Oregon Humane Society for providing the opportunity to honor Ben Snodgrass, by volunteering as a group. OHS was an organization that Ben was very fond of and after seeing what it is they do, I think we all understand why Ben was so fond of them. Having 13 co-workers participate in the maintenance of the walking trails was very rewarding and a fantastic way to honor Ben. If you haven’t volunteered at OHS please consider doing so, the work they do for all the animals is amazing.”   – Jeff S.

We love being a part of the local community and giving back.  To learn more about what we’ve done with our SHC Cares program, visit here.

How to fix common HVAC problems

When it comes to your HVAC system, it’s normal to feel a little bit overwhelmed in understanding how it all works. There are a lot of different components that make your heating and cooling system work well. And if things aren’t working at their peak, you’re probably scratching your head trying to figure out what the problem is. We can help! Here are some common HVAC problems and our recommended solutions.

Leaky ducts:
Do you know if the ductwork in your home or office is properly installed or sealed? Most people don’t think about the ductwork in their home, but in fact, it’s something that’s very important to think about – especially when it comes to HVAC usage. This can cost you hundreds and even thousands of dollars over time because of wasted energy. Not to mention, it can allow harmful particles in the air to transfer inside to the air you’re breathing. Our solution: Aeroseal Duct Sealing. This is a unique and highly effective patented process that fixes leaks from the inside out. It has a 98% success process and involves sealing cracks or holes in the ducts with a sealant. As the air makes it way through the leaks, the aerosol particles collide to stick to the leaky edges and soon they’re sealed and you’re good to go.

Poor air flow:
If you’re not getting enough air flow from your system to your vents, first check for blockages around the vents. Make sure all registers are opened and that there is no furniture that’s blocking them. In addition, make sure that the outside unit is clear of any debris or other build up that can accumulate during the winter and spring months, as this can also contribute to poor air flow.

Funky smells:
If you’re noticing a weird odor coming from your system, first you should rule out any gas leaks. Next, check your air filters. This is extremely important, as it will help maintain the life of your system. In addition, it will help keep pet hair, dust, and any mildew build up away from the air filters for prolonged periods of time, which can help reduce nasty odors.

Your heating and cooling system is a complex machine that will provide the comfort you need year-round, but if there are problems starting to pop up with it, it’s important to get things checked out right away. Stay on top of scheduling your preventative maintenance appointments with our experienced team of HVAC professionals to ensure that no problems occur! Preventative maintenance appointments also give you the peace of mind knowing that things are working efficiently, so you can save money on your energy bill.

Perhaps your HVAC problems are too big to solve with a repair and a full HVAC replacement is needed. Our solution is to get you the right system for your home and your budget. Right now, there are a variety of rebates and incentives happening that can save you thousands of dollars on a new system. Contact us today for more details!
