BRRRR! It’s cold out there! The cold weather is officially here and besides bundling yourself up to stay warm, winterizing your home (especially your furnace) should be top priority! Your furnace is essential in cold weather so making sure that it’s prepared for the coldest months of the year is important. Here are some tips on how to prepare your system for the rest of the winter.
Tip #1: Clean and/or replace the filter.
The filter is one of the most important parts of your system. Clogged filters cause big problems! It can stop the flow of warm air, which means that the system needs to work even harder to deliver the heat to your home. If this is prolonged, the system will wear out quickly. Be sure to clean the air filters on a monthly basis. They should be completely replaced every couple of months.
Tip #2: Clean out the inside of the furnace.
When you open up the inside of the furnace, you will likely see a buildup of dust and other debris, often at the base of the heater area. You don’t need any special equipment to clean this out – just a regular vacuum. Vacuum it out and get it cleaned so it can function efficiently.
Tip #3: Be sure vents aren’t blocked.
If your furnace vents are obstructed, it can cause your whole system to fail. Be sure that your vents aren’t covered by furniture. Also, be sure to check the inside of the vents if you can to be sure that dirt or other debris isn’t clogging them.
