Our team at Specialty Heating and Cooling understands that taking care of the Earth is crucial. This starts small by doing things around us that take care of the environment and save energy. Our business recycles metal, refrigerant, paper, oil, and more – but we also help educate our customers on how to save energy.
Providing energy efficient heating and cooling solutions is one major part of our business, but looking at whole home energy saving solutions is also important. Here, we’ll discuss some important to-dos to ensure your home saves energy this December.
Seal Drafts & Air Leaks
Your heating system has a big job in keeping you and your family warm this winter, but it can only do that if the rest of the areas in your home are sealed properly. This month, take some time to check around windows, doors, and attic access points for leaks or drafts. Install weatherstripping or caulking around gaps to ensure warm air stays inside. This is a simple way to save energy, keep cold air drafts from making rooms uncomfortable, and keep utility costs down.
Keep Temperatures Steady
Find the ideal temperature for your home and keep it there. Keeping that number set, rather than adjusting it every day, can save energy and reduce wear and tear on your furnace system. If you are traveling for the holidays or away for large portions of the day, keep the thermostat turned down to reduce energy consumption.
Don’t Forget the Insulation
Is the insulation in your home adequate? Now’s the time to check. Adding insulation to crawl spaces, basements, or attics can create an extra layer of warmth and protection this winter.
Schedule professional maintenance.
Regular preventative maintenance on your furnace helps it run well and minimizes energy waste. Our licensed technicians will run an energy efficiency test to ensure it is operating at its peak, clean or replace air filters, and make sure all internal components are functioning as they should. If there’s anything wrong, we’ll get it repaired or adjusted. Professional maintenance gives you peace of mind during the coldest winter months.
Replace and/or clean air filters.
The air filters in your furnace system play an important role in keeping your system running. They also trap harmful bacteria, airborne pathogens, and material that makes its way into the air you breathe. We recommend cleaning and/or replacing your furnace filters every other month – more often if there are smokers or pets in the home.
Turn Off Lights or Appliances Not Regularly In Use
With winter days getting darker earlier, homes use more light and electricity. Even so, it’s important to be mindful of your electricity usage. Turn off lights when you’re not in the room, turn holiday lights on a timer to save electricity, and use solar-powered décor when possible. Unplug appliances, electronics, or other devices that use electricity if you’re not using them. All of this can conserve energy and minimize your utility costs, too.
Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Winter is one of the most common times for house fires. So, be sure to check all your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries. Test each one to ensure they work well.
Our team at Specialty Heating and Cooling is standing by for all of your HVAC needs this winter. Whether you need a tune-up on your machine, a repair on an existing system, or want to plan for a new furnace installation in 2026, we can help! We look forward to hearing from you soon.
