A zoning system divides a home into controlled areas so the thermostat and connected zone controls can coordinate temperature settings. Whether zoning is appropriate depends on the existing HVAC equipment, duct configuration, and control setup.

What Professional Thermostat Installation Involves

Before connecting a new thermostat, we assess the HVAC equipment and existing control wiring for compatibility. This is particularly important with connected models because their power and communication requirements may differ from those of an older control.

Some installations require a new C-wire, also called a common wire. A C-wire supplies continuous low-voltage power to the thermostat. Unused wires behind an existing control don’t necessarily mean the new model can be connected without further assessment.

We also verify whether the thermostat must coordinate with zoning controls or other HVAC accessories. Proper wiring and compatibility are essential for reliable temperature regulation and energy efficiency.

Professional Installation or Self-Installation?

Self-installation may be practical when the new thermostat is compatible with the HVAC system and the existing wiring supports every required connection. Before disconnecting the old control, you need to know which terminals are in use and whether the replacement requires continuous power.

Professional installation is a better fit when the wiring layout is unclear, the system needs a new C-wire, or compatibility requires assessment. It can also be useful when a connected thermostat must communicate with zoning controls or supported accessories. Incorrect installation can interfere with temperature regulation and energy efficiency.

Energy Trust of Oregon Smart Thermostat Incentives

As of 2026, Energy Trust of Oregon offers a $100 incentive for a qualifying self-installed thermostat and a $250 incentive when an actively licensed contractor installs a qualifying model. Approval isn’t automatic. The household, equipment, contractor, and product must meet current program requirements.

Eligibility requires the home to be primarily heated by a gas furnace supplied by NW Natural, Cascade Natural Gas, or Avista. The incentive is limited to one per residence. Confirm the current product and installation requirements before choosing a thermostat or beginning the work.

Energy Trust of Oregon estimates that connected thermostats can save eligible households approximately $35 to $45 per year on heating costs. Greater savings may be possible with heat pump systems, but actual results depend on the equipment, thermostat settings, home characteristics, and household usage.
